Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (LKWP) is one of the largest wildlife parks in Malaysia. The park occupy 280 acres of terrested land and located about 25 km from Kota Kinabalu.  It is home to a varied collection of tropical animals which lives in enclosures designed to be like their habitat.

The main attraction are the critically endangered Bornean Elephants, Sun Bear, Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey and Clouded Leopard. Other animals that can be found include Otter, Sambar Deer, Gibbons, Hornbills, Ankole and others.

The Botanical Garden is set within the wildlife park as an added attraction to the tropical rainforest theme of the park. A 1.4 km nature trail leads to several sections of the garden, each one highlighting an important element of the rainforest.

Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is a zoo 25km south of KK City between Penampang and Kinarut districts. Managed by Sabah Wildlife Department, the zoo is nestled on 280 acres of forested land and features an open environment concept seen in spacious enclosures that resemble the animal's habitat as closely as possible.

Here, visitors can view most of the mammals endemic to Borneo, including pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and the popular Orang Utan. Tigers, otters, sun bears, wild cattle, civet cats, crocodiles, snakes and birds are some other animals that make up the cast. The park can be reached from the city through Donggongon (Penampang) or Putatan (Papar).

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park was officially open to the public on the 17th February 2007. It is located along the Penampang-Papar old road and is fully developed by the Sabah Wildlife Department.

The park consists of two components: zoological and botanical. The main objective of the park is to become a family-oriented park and the emphasis is put on the Children’s Zoo.

Among the inhabitants of the zoo (zoological component) are the Borneo Pygmy elephants, Proboscis monkey, Malayan tiger, as well as some different species of deer.

The botanical component, on the other hand; offers visitors the opportunity to go jungle trekking along the botanical trail. The paved trail is about 1.4 kilometers long. However, for leisurely strolls, visitors are only advised to walk halfway along the trail.

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is located along the Penampang-Papar old road, about 25 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu. It was officially opened to the public on the 17th of February 2007. The park is fully developed by the Sabah Wildlife Department.

The park is 280 acres in size and is made up of two parts; the zoological and the botanical side. The park's main objective is to create a family-oriented park which puts in more emphasis on making it more of a children's zoo. Among the many residents of the zoo are the Borneo Pygmy elephants, Sumatran rhinoceros, Orang Utan, Proboscis monkey, Malayan Tiger as well as a few species of deer.

The botanical component offers visitors the chance to go jungle trekking along the botanical trail. The readily paved trail is approximately 1.4 kilometers long and the botanical component is about 200 acres in size. The aviary is a more lively section where you will hear myriads of sounds of the mynahs, greeting visitors who come to the park. At the aviary, there are many species of birds like the hornbill, pigeons, parrots, eagles, egrets and many more.

The children's section of the zoo has pygmy elephants, ponies and goats. Children can enjoy elephant rides daily from 10.30am to 11.30am and from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Sabah has so many places of interest to offer to visitors. If you have only a limited time here, do make sure you spend it wisely. But if you are able to extend your stay, please do so. Accommodations in Sabah are plentiful and ranging from budget hotels to high-end ones.

The journey to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park takes 30 minutes to an hour's drive from Kota Kinabalu, the estimated distance is 20 kilometers. For transportation, visitors can either drive or take a taxi from the city centre.
